Fasting, especially when paired with prayer, is one of the most powerful ways to draw closer to God. At True Vision Church, we believe this is a God given discipline that helps us focus seeking His wisdom, His intervention, and His direction. The heart of spiritual fasting is setting aside time to tune out distractions and truly hear from the Father.

And here’s a bonus: the Daniel Fast often brings health benefits too! Many people notice positive changes simply because of the clean, natural foods involved. Just remember, if you’re making big changes to your diet or exercise routine, it’s always wise to check in with your healthcare provider first.

FAQ

Biblical fasting means setting aside food, and sometimes drink, for a set time to focus completely on God. It’s about putting Him above physical needs, using that time for prayer, Scripture, and deeper communion, NOT for show.

The Daniel Fast is a biblically inspired fast where you EAT simple, natural foods. Mainly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds and drink only water.

You AVOID meat, dairy, sweeteners, processed foods, and anything artificial or processed.

It’s not just about food; it’s about focusing on God through prayer, Scripture, and surrender. While the fast is spiritual, many people also notice health benefits. If you have health concerns, check with your doctor first.

True Vision Enters the Daniel Fast for 21 Days (or as long as you can)

Fast Start Date January 4, 2025 @ 6:00AM
Fast End Date January 25, 2025 @ 5:59:59AM

  • YES: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains (brown rice, oats), nuts, seeds, legumes, water, 100% juice (in moderation).
  • NO: Meat, dairy, sweeteners (honey, sugar), leavened bread, processed foods, coffee, tea, alcohol, fried foods, solid fats.

Our church fast has two purposes:

1. It’s personal.
The Bible tells us that our flesh and spirit are in conflict (Galatians 5:17). Fasting helps us say “no” to the flesh and bring our bodies under control. As we go deeper into the fast, our spirit becomes more alive and tuned in to God. We start hearing His voice more clearly, discovering His will, seeing prayers answered, and walking closer with the Father.

2. It’s corporate.
We’re also fasting together as a church family for breakthrough salvation for souls, freedom for those in bondage, healing for marriages, and so much more. These are things God already desires to do. He’s waiting for people who will ask in faith. When we fast as one body, we unite with a shared purpose: to seek a powerful move of God for those in need.

  • Jesus fasted to acknowledge His dependence and to gain spiritual strength through reliance on the Holy Spirit and God’s Word. He did this before He began His public ministry (Luke 4:1-2).
  • Nehemiah fasted for confession, repentance and favor in the sight of the king to get permission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:4).
  • David humbled himself, asking God to intervene because of injustice (Psalm 35:13). In 2 Samuel 12:17-23, he fasted for healing and miraculous intervention.
  • Mordecai and the Jews fasted upon hearing the news of Haman’s wicked plot for their extermination (Esther 4:3).
  • The early church fasted while worshiping and committing their ministry to the Lord. They also sought the Lord through fasting for guidance and confirmation during the appointment of elders (Acts 13:2, 14:23).
  • Jesus expected His disciples to fast, but He did not command it (Matthew 6:16).

Fasting should never harm your body. If you have any health concerns, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting the Daniel Fast or making any big changes to your diet.

The good news? The Daniel Fast is actually a very healthy way to eat! Most health professionals will support it, though they might suggest a few tweaks if you have specific needs. For example, pregnant or nursing moms may be told to include fish, chicken, and cheese while still following the overall plan. Diabetics might need extra carbs or lean proteins like chicken and fish. And if you’re super active whether through sports, bodybuilding, or your job you may need to make slight adjustments too.

But here’s the heart of it: this fast isn’t about the “rules.” It’s about setting aside our fleshly desires and surrendering to what the Spirit wants to speak to us. Don’t get so caught up in the details that you miss the real purpose drawing closer to God.

Plan: Decide ahead of time what you’ll eat and drink during the fast.
Pray: Go into the fast with a clear purpose seek God intentionally.
Expect: You might feel mild headaches (especially if you’re cutting caffeine), but also look forward to spiritual renewal and a deeper connection with God.
